Rhetoric

Rhetoric

In this rhetoric I have included my daily journal entries, reading journals, and class writings which highlight how I have practiced writing and taken skills taught in class to improve things such as a final essay. While reading novels in writing 010 we were required to write reflections on our readings. These allowed me to further sharpen my skills at paraphrasing. Whenever we would read a novel I would create a reflection. These summaries of the story were very helpful to use in discussions, and when writing essays. I learned to summarize more accurately and concisely throughout the course. After reading the book, what was important would become clearer in discussion because the important topics would be the focus. Knowing what information is important and what is irrelevant became a central skill in regards to writing essays. The paramedic method also aided in perfecting my paraphrasing skills. Learning how to paraphrase led to improvement of how I identify main ideas, along with major and minor support.

When constructing essays, it was necessary to utilize major and minor support, I had to learn how to differentiate the two more clearly. I improved my ability to analyze literature and mentally separate the significant ideas from the more minor ones. This was important because it allowed for my essays to be more concise. They had a main focus, and evidentiary support, which in some cases was major ideas and minor ideas. Since I wrote frequently, read, gave two group led discussions and watched many, I improved my ability to comprehend the course material.

Through much reading, writing and analysis, including discussion, I improved my aability to analyze readings, lectures, and presentations. We read several novels throughout the semester. I would do each reading, and while taking notes I would look for any themes and motifs I saw and also be conscious of elements such as tone. Class discussions were very helpful. When everyone contributed, we all learned new things we would have overlooked. For example some books were vague about certain plotlines. I would overlook a certain aspect of the story, and someone else would bring it up in discussion. This henceforth gave me further ideas as far as what topic I would centralize my essay on.
